Development of the population and district numbers
The population of Stuttgart has increased significantly overall since the 1970s. At more than 628,000 inhabitants, the metropolitan area of Stuttgart has the largest number of residents. This is followed by the administrative districts of Ludwigsburg and Esslingen at approx. 538,000 and 529,000 inhabitants. The administrative district of Göppingen has the lowest number of residents at 254,600 inhabitants. As expected, the Stuttgart urban area has the highest population density. This is where an average of more than 3,000 people live in one square kilometre. The second, much less dense area is the administrative district of Esslingen, at 825 inhabitants/km². The administrative district of Göppingen has both the lowest population density and the smallest number of residents. All administrative districts of the Stuttgart region are above the average for Baden-Württemberg of 307 residents/km².
Foreigners
The Stuttgart urban area also has the highest proportion of foreigners. Every fourth resident has a foreign passport. The proportion of foreigners in the remaining districts of the Stuttgart region is between 16 and 18 percent, which is also above the federal state average.
Numbers in context with Baden-Württemberg
The Stuttgart region is the most populous region of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. One quarter of all residents of Baden-Württemberg live in this region. Leading by a large margin, it is followed by the regions Rhine-Neckar, Southern Upper Rhine and Central Upper Rhine. These regions are each home to more than one million inhabitants and hence to approx. 10 percent of the federal state’s population. The regions with the lowest population figures are Black-Forest-Baar-Heuberg and East Württemberg, which are approximately the size of the Rems-Murr district and together make up just over four percent of the population.
