Sector description

Hamburg has a highly diverse industrial sector – there are few places in Europe that can boast such a concentration of primary industry with, for example, the world’s leading integrated copper company (Aurubis), a highly efficient steelworks (ArcelorMittal) and a modern aluminium smelter (Trimet).
Hamburg is also the third largest civil aircraft construction city in the world thanks to the presence of its biggest employer (Airbus: approximately 12,000 jobs) and also its third largest employer (Lufthansa Technik: approximately 10,000 jobs). Hamburg’s only DAX-listed company, Beiersdorf, likewise belongs to the manufacturing industry and accounts for approximately 4,500 jobs in the city.
The renewable energy sector also has an important part to play: in recent years, Hamburg has become northern Germany’s wind power hub, with numerous wind power companies establishing either their head offices or a branch in the city. Furthermore, Hamburg is where the major control centres of various international industrial enterprises are based, including ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, Siemens, Philips and British American Tobacco, and boasts the head offices of industrial global market leaders such as Körber and Jungheinrich.
